Interpreting Text
The scope of this course has allowed me to derive a new perspective on what can and should be considered a “text”. Though traditionally referred to as a sort of book, article, or any literary work, the concept of text can be more broadly applied to countless other things. When considering more abstract texts it is easy to get confused, making proper analysis techniques more crucial than ever. As a finance major, my focus of study is the economic sector of our country, one riddled with an abundance of more far-fetched texts. By analyzing governmental fiscal policy in the manner one would decipher a research article, I am able to collect a better understanding of the process. Using a literary technique such as SOAPSToneS, the process can divided into a few key parts. The speaker being the institution initiating the policy, the occasion can be referred to as the situation which prompted governmental intervention, the audience would double as consumers, and the analogy continues. Just like a reader looking in depth about the motives and actions of an author, an economist can adopt the same tools to further their comprehension of what is happening and more importantly why it happens.
