Chapter 5
Chapter 5 of the Bedford Book of Genres maps out the process of a research proposal from the very beginning. It commences before a topic of research is even discussed and provides excellent ideas of how one should dwindle down potential topics. Subsequently, the text explains the importance of asking a “research question” that concerns the topic chosen. The evolution of the research question in displayed in the chapter as the question gets increasingly more specific with time. Most importantly, the chapter carefully reviews the difficult transition from a research question to a research proposal, a concept that was entirely new for me. Through a tailored example, the book step by step shows the growth of a simple question into essentially an outline of a research paper, a tool that could prove to be extremely helpful. Overall, the chapter clarifies the importance of not only conducting adequate research but also knowing what to do with it the newly acquired knowledge afterward.
