Chapter 2
As a high school student, I took Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, where we learned a ridiculous amount of literary techniques. Having reviewed concepts of rhetoric endlessly, I believed I had a frim grasp on the elements of composition. However, after reading chapter 2 it is clear that a lot remains to be learned. Though the ideas of audience and purpose resonate quite well from my prior experience with SOAPSTONES, the text continues more in depth about the rhetorical situation. It covers the idea of design, an overlooked element of composition that deals with the format of a text. This practice is extremely important now during our time, as the bulk of text we see throughout our day is on a screen. Lastly the chapter delves into the topic of sources. It defines the term source broadly, explaining that a simple life experience could very well serve as a source, and could be a great base for writing of any variety.
