Critical Reading
The text presented in chapter 8 gives an abundance of tips and techniques to assist young writers. The most beneficial of which being the concept of “critical reading”. The author refers to an example about reading a humorous article from The Onion, and then begs the question of why that article is funny. This allows students to begin thinking deeper about what they read. By analyzing or critically reading a piece of text, students can consider why talented writers do the things they do. Gaining an understanding of the purpose behind the author’s use of a certain syntax, irony, or any other literary devices, will make it easier for students to incorporate the same techniques within their writing. Though the chapter was developed aid in composition, it provided a great insight of how reading can ultimately improve your writing.
