Genres n' Jobs

Though the text presented in chapter one was created for academia purposes, the knowledge it provides has implications far beyond the classroom. The reading delves into several techniques for composition that can be easily applied to the occupational sector. As college students everywhere can testify, obtaining a job entails persuading employers; similar to authors persuading their respective audience. Having a full understanding of your audience is crucial because employers, like audiences, have their own reserved opinions as to what character, or genre, they prefer. With a little research, potential employees could cater the specific needs of the hiring staff and mirror the genre of candidates typically selected. However, understanding your audience is only half the battle, as specificity can not compensate for poor material. Authors of all caliber are consistently seeking to better their work and often do this by appealing to readers through ethos, pathos, and logos. These age-old composition techniques can be the difference between a follow up interview and an afternoon of anxiously waiting by the phone, only to doze off to your own sobbing. Including these appeals within a job resume would increase your ability to persuade employers that you are deserving of the opportunity, sparing you the crying. Specifically, adding detailed employment experience on a resume appeals largely to ethos and builds credibility, just as providing a concrete track record of previous sales can present a logical argument for employers to consider. Keeping within your genre, and improving your work as well as yourself will result in a positive outcome in anything from writing an essay to receiving a dream job.
